Joey Galante was born Joanna Lucia Guinevere Galante, to crime boss Vincenzo and Carmela Galante. As the youngest granddaughter of Pasquale 'Junior' Galante, the last Capo Di Tutti Capi of Gotham's Five Families, she was set to be protected and sheltered. But that changed upon the death of her mother Carmela and later, the death of her grandfather, in which event, her father, Vincenzo Sr, took the role of Boss, after the title of Capo Di Tutti Capi was abolished.Vincenzo quickly saw that his daughter was sharp minded, strong willed and held her own with her two older brothers, Vincenzo Jr and Michael. He knew he could not keep Joey in the dark like most mafia daughters, so he turned on the light of knowledge so that she would be able to protect herself if she needed to, and never hid the true nature of who he was in that world.Joey grew up understanding the role of a woman in the mafia. While it wasn't necessarily her fathers wish for her to be subservient, she remained in her place, a silent observer of the life. Soon, she would become involved with Dino Inzerillo, the heir to the Inzerillo Family name. It was what Joey could do to play her part and be the loyal italian daughter she continuously strived to be - this was not a potential union for love but one for diplomacy among the families.But her frustrations grew, bound by limits that she felt she could break free from. Moments of defiance caused Dino to raise his hand to Joey, but knowing the severe consequences of not only touching the daughter of a made man but also the daughter of a boss who's family had had a long and tense relationship with his own, forced him not to follow through. Except for just one time. One time where a bruise was left behind on Joey's cheek. It was the moment that pushed her past those limitations that had long held her in a very rigid position.With her father serving time in prison, she visited him, without hiding the bruising that Dino had inflicted. Vincenzo's notoriously short fuse displayed itself, with a threat to kill the Inzerillo prince; but Joey had other plans.She proposed that her father allow her to pursue the same kind of life that he had. Initially, he protested, attempting to steer her away from the idea so that she could remain away from that life. A life that often ended in imprisonment or death.
